Virtual Diary vs Apple Journal: Which Diary App Should You Use?

Apple Journal is free and built in; Virtual Diary is a paper-like diary with Apple Pencil handwriting and no account. An honest comparison for iPad and Mac.

Tarak5 min read

The short answer: Apple Journal is free, built into iPad, Mac and iPhone, and made for capturing your days in words, photos, audio and places. Virtual Diary is a paid, paper-like diary for iPad and Mac: one ruled page a day, written by hand with Apple Pencil or typed, with no account and no suggestions. If you want free and multimedia, use Apple Journal. If you want a quiet handwritten diary, use Virtual Diary.

Since iPadOS 26 and macOS 26, Apple's Journal app is on the iPad and the Mac, not just the iPhone. That makes it the first diary many iPad owners will try, so it is a fair question: why pay for another one?

The idea behind each

Apple Journal is a journal of your life. It looks at what you did today, the photos you took, the walk, the music, the people, and offers them as starting points. An entry can mix typing, handwriting, photos, audio and a place on a map, and you can keep several journals.

Virtual Diary is a diary you write. It opens to today's page, ruled and dated, and waits. Nothing suggests a topic, nothing counts streaks. When the lines are full, the page is full. It is built for people who already know what they want to write, and want it to feel like paper.

Handwriting

Both let you write with Apple Pencil on iPad. In Apple Journal, handwriting lives inside an entry alongside typed text and media. In Virtual Diary, the whole page is paper: you write on ruled lines in fountain-pen inks, erase, undo, and turn handwriting into text when you want to. Handwriting is recognised on the iPad itself, so search finds a line you scribbled months ago. On the Mac, your iPad handwriting appears exactly as you wrote it.

Privacy

Both are private by Apple's standards: Apple Journal syncs through iCloud and can be locked with Face ID or Touch ID. Virtual Diary goes further in a few specific ways. It has no account and no server of ours at all, no analytics, and no AI. It never reads your photos, location or activity to make suggestions. And a page you lock is sealed: after ten seconds to change your mind, it can never be edited again.

Reading back

Apple Journal lets you browse entries by journal, search them, and see them on a map. Virtual Diary has a calendar that jumps to any day of any year, search across typed words and handwriting, and On This Day, which shows what you wrote on the same date in past years.

Price

Apple Journal is free. Virtual Diary lets you write your first page free, with no account and no card; after that it is $49 once for iPad or Mac, or $79 for both. There is no subscription.
