Choosing a Diary App for iPad with Apple Pencil: 8 Things to Check

Thinking of keeping your diary on an iPad? What actually matters in a handwriting diary app, from ink and paper to privacy, export and price.

An iPad with Apple Pencil is close to the perfect diary: it is always with you, it never runs out of pages, and it can hold forty years of writing in something lighter than one notebook. But most "journal apps" are built for photos, moods and quick notes, not for people who want to write.

If you keep a diary seriously, here is what to look for. (We make one of these apps, so we have tried to keep this list honest and useful whichever you choose.)

1. Does the ink feel like ink?

Write a full page before you decide. Look for low latency, pressure that varies the line, and ink colours you would actually choose for a diary: black, a fountain-pen blue, sepia. You also want a real eraser and undo, without a toolbar that takes over the page.

2. Is it a diary, or a notes app?

Note-taking apps are brilliant for lectures and planning, but they are organised around notebooks, folders and infinite canvases. A diary is organised around days. Check that every day has its own dated page, that today is always one tap away, and that you can move through the calendar quickly.

3. Can you search your handwriting?

Handwriting you cannot find is handwriting you will never reread. Good apps recognise handwriting and include it in search. Better ones do that on the device, so your pages are not uploaded to be read.

4. Who can read it?

Ask three questions:

  • Do I need an account? If yes, your diary is tied to a company's servers.
  • Where are my pages stored? On your device and your own iCloud is very different from "our cloud".
  • Is there a lock? Face ID or Touch ID on the cover should be standard.

5. Can you get everything out?

You may keep this diary for decades, longer than many apps exist. Make sure you can export all of it, handwriting included, to ordinary files you control.

6. How does it handle permanence?

Some writers want every page editable forever. Others like ink that dries: a way to seal a finished page so it can never be changed. Pick the one that matches how you write.

7. What does it cost over ten years?

A $5-a-month subscription is $600 over ten years. For a diary you mean to keep for life, a one-time price is worth looking for, as long as the app does not depend on servers it has to keep paying for.

8. Does it stay out of your way?

Feeds, streak counters, badges and AI "insights" can be useful in other apps. In a diary they are distractions at best, and at worst they turn private writing into something performed. The best diary app is the one that disappears when you open it.

Where Virtual Diary fits

We built Virtual Diary for people who check all eight boxes: a leather-bound diary with one ruled page a day, Apple Pencil in black, blue or sepia, on-device handwriting search, Face ID on the cover, a private copy in your own iCloud, export any time, pages you can lock like dried ink, and one price for life. It also comes to the Mac for the nights you would rather type.

Your first page is free. If it is not for you, at least you will know exactly what to look for.

One quiet page a day. Only you can read it.

Virtual Diary is a private paper diary for iPad and Mac. Your first page is free.
